After ringing in the New Year with Ohio sports betting, I woke up and immediately wanted to know how the new addition to the family was doing. Of course, that meant heading to Twitter to see what people were saying.
It all started here:
Welcome to sports betting Ohio! It was fun spending New Year's Eve with you.

The new year brings in Ohio sports betting
What’s New Year’s without a party? Well, the party is just getting started in Ohio.
hope to see y’all there 💕💕 pic.twitter.com/rT0UmYhUDw

Of course, the Ohio Casino Control Commission (OCCC) got the timing just wrong enough that Ohio State fans in Ohio couldn’t legally bet on the Peach Bowl.
Well, maybe the commission saved bettors some money because Ohio State missed the winning field goal just as the clock struck midnight, and sports betting in Ohio became legal.

Good news for you football fans, you still have the Browns:
It's cruel that #ohiostatefootball lost at the stroke of midnight just as #sportsbetting became legal. The #goodnews is you still have the #Browns and a sweet @DraftKings deal: https://t.co/8SsEWTIF3y

Or maybe not:
With sports betting now legal in Ohio, today marks the day that I begin to bet the Browns lose on the money line every game for the rest of my life.
Time to cash in on following a terrible franchise. #BlessedAreThePoorInSpirit

A new sports betting market always has ceremonial first bets
It wasn’t long before the ceremonial first bets were placed.
Sports betting is off and running in Ohio as Pete Rose, Bernie Kosar and Pacman Jones are placing bets.
Then, T.J. Houshmandzadeh later this week … https://t.co/AKDzTKpaIz

Pete Rose making the first sport bet in Ohio history on the reds to win the World Series is like Snoop Dogg being the first person in Cali to buy when it was legalized 😂

I will just leave the whole Pete Rose being courted to place the first bet out there for you to ponder. Let the battle about whether Rose belongs in the Hall of Fame play out on Twitter.
Our guy Danny Cross also checked out the unveiling of the BetMGM Sportsbook at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati.
Stopped by the new BetMGM Sportsbook at GABP today. Cool space in the former Machine Room restaurant with a field view. https://t.co/md0t4Fj7Fo

More first Ohio sports bets
It’s been a long wait for bettors to place legal bets in the state — a very long wait. It’s no wonder there is a ton of excitement. Showing your bets on Twitter is the 2023 version of sharing what you had for dinner from back in the day.
How do you think these bettors did?

No escaping from betting commercials
After more than a month of pre-lanch offers, it is clear that sports betting fans already feel the advertising fatigue. There is no hiding from the ads, but if history and other states are to be trusted, they will lessen — eventually.
Dear Twitter Advertising: I am aware sports betting is live and legal in Ohio. I have a casino 10 minutes away from me. But as a rule I never bet in my own backyard. Now please disappear from my feed every 5-7 tweets. #Annoying

For now, though, expect your Twitter feed to be full of Ohio sports betting promotions and bonus codes. Here’s a hint, they are all the same, and they are all listed on our Ohio sports betting page.
Bet responsibly, Ohio!
With the launch of any new gambling market, the potential risk of gambling addiction is always top of mind for regulators. The OCCC has taken its job seriously and put several measures in place that go above and beyond what other states are doing.
