Application dates set for Ohio sports betting

The Ohio Casino Control Commission on Wednesday took another major step in the march toward legalized sports betting in Ohio.

The commission announced application deadlines and approval windows for future Ohio sportsbooks during its monthly meeting. Ohio will begin accepting applications on June 15 with deadlines of July 15 and Aug. 15 for different types of licenses.

According to Ohio’s Sports Gaming Implementation Timeline, the commission will begin accepting applications on June 15 for the following proprietors:

  • Type-A, -B, & -C Proprietors
  • First-designated Mobile Management Services Providers (MMSPs)
  • Management Services Providers
  • Suppliers

The deadline for these applications is July 15. Type-A licenses are for online sports betting companies, and Type-B licenses are for physical sportsbook locations.

Type-C licenses cover self-service or clerk-operated terminals. The commission will begin accepting applications for Type-C sports gaming hosts and second-designated MMSPs on July 15. The deadline to submit these applications is Aug. 15.

Ohio Sportsbook Application Deadlines Set

Matt Schuler, executive director of the Ohio Casino Control Commission, made it clear during the commission meeting that these deadlines are firm. Schuler noted that the commission must review and fully vet a multitude of information in a tight timeframe.

The commission recently released drafts of the Ohio gaming license applications, which were open to public feedback. Those applications will be finalized and available by June 1.

Ohio’s universal start date for sports betting will be no later than Jan. 1, 2023. Schuler has not yet announced a start date, but the commission detailed additional deadlines that will be set 30 and 60 days before an Ohio launch

All responsible gaming plans, equipment testing, geolocation procedures, house rules and required procedures will be due 60 days before the universal start date. Sports gaming employee applications will also be due 60 days before launch.

All equipment must be ready for commission verification 30 days before the universal start date.

Ohio Sports Betting License Applications On The Way

Ohio is currently accepting feedback on a draft of the application for Type-A and Type-B sports gaming licenses. The commission this week also released a draft application for online betting management services providers.

The deadline for emailing comments on the applications is 5 p.m. Friday, May 6.

Last week, the commission released a draft of the application for a Type-C sports gaming license. The deadline to provide feedback on that draft has expired.

After review, the commission will file the applications with the state’s Common Sense Initiative and then the Joint Committee on Agency Rule Review.

All sports betting proprietor applications will be available by June 1.
