The Problem Gambling Network of Ohio has launched the Ohio Gambling Telehealth Network, a new responsible gambling resource for those in need of problem gambling support services in the Buckeye State.
This new effort is to address the growing need for mental health experts who specialize in gambling issues. There are plenty of resources to identify problem gambling habits, but not many ways to address the issue. This is a step toward solving that problem.
With Ohio sports betting growing quickly, these continued efforts to combat irresponsible gambling have never been more important. Ohio has been at the forefront of strong gaming regulation for years. And its recent efforts are more evidence of that fact.
Problem Gambling Network of Ohio launches Ohio Gambling Telehealth Network
So, what exactly does this new Ohio Gambling Telehealth Network provide? The project website outlines its goals:
“The Ohio Gambling Telehealth Network (OGTN) is a system of counseling providers throughout Ohio available to those affected by problem gambling or gambling disorder. OGTN is available to provide counseling through a telehealth platform to those without local access to qualified counselors specifically trained to treat those living with problem gambling concerns or gambling disorder.”
Simply stated, the Problem Gambling Network of Ohio created this project to increase accessibility to mental health care. OGTN does so by connecting qualified gambling counselors to those in need via the telehealth network.
These counselors work with those seeking help one-on-one. And they are trained to help with issues beyond gaming — such as the personal challenges that led to gambling problems. If a client needs care beyond the Ohio Gambling Telehealth Network’s scope, counselors will help connect clients with the appropriate provider. There are also plans to add outpatient counseling groups.
Problem Gambling Network of Ohio Executive Director Derek Longmeier is excited to offer Buckeye State residents what he calls a “safety net.”
“Our focus for OGTN is greater than the name implies. OGTN is designed as a safety net for individuals who live in communities without local access to a qualified gambling counsellor. Our primary goal is to build the workforce of local providers qualified to provide gambling counselling.”

Ohio Gambling Telehealth Network is one of many new Ohio RG initiatives
This new Ohio Gambling Telehealth Network is just one of many new endeavors regulators are taking to promote Ohio responsible gambling.
Recently, the youth responsible gambling program Change The Game Ohio partnered with the Ohio High School Athletic Association to begin responsible gambling education earlier in students’ lives. Change The Game Ohio is operated by a trio of gaming regulation committees: the Ohio Lottery Commission, the Ohio Casino Control Commission, and Ohio Mental Health and Addiction Services.
Ohio Lottery Director Michele Gillcrist put out a statement announcing the new Change The Game Ohio initiative and the importance of educating students early.
“As part of Ohio for Responsible Gambling, we recognize the critical importance of addressing gambling behaviors early in life. Our partnership with the OHSAA through the Change the Game Ohio initiative aims to equip parents, educators and students with the tools they need to identify and prevent problem gambling before it takes root. Together, we can foster a safer environment for Ohio’s youth.”
Recent efforts have also been made to support college students — particularly student-athletes. The More Than A Bet campaign, for instance, helps student-athletes deal with harassment and other negative repercussions of sports betting.
Ohio Casino Control Commission chair Tom Strickrath announced the new More Than A Bet campaign through a press release.
“These young athletes are more than a bet. The mental toll of online harassment is unacceptable. By learning about the issue and supporting student-athletes, we can change the narrative.”
All of these efforts are separate from other projects related to Responsible Gambling Education Month which takes place every September and is hosted by the American Gaming Association.
“This September, join the American Gaming Association and our members as we highlight the industry’s responsible gaming education efforts. Together, we can promote gaming literacy and consumer education, elevate employee training, and work with partners to advance our understanding of responsible gambling.”
Many Ohio sports betting operators stepped up with projects of their own for Responsible Gambling Education Month.
Ohio responsible gambling efforts are important as sports betting rises 46% YoY
The extreme growth in the Ohio sports betting market has led to various projects, all directly aimed at responsible gambling.
In July, commonly the slowest month of the sports betting year, Ohio sportsbooks took $466.6 million of wagers. That number was 46% more than a year prior when Ohio bettors wagered $313.6 million on sports in July 2023.
Almost 50% year-over-year growth in the total amount bet on sports is an eye-opening figure. What’s more, the Ohio sports betting market shows no signs of slowing down. DraftKings alone accepted $160.2 million in wagers to lead the state, a title DraftKings has held for three consecutive months.
